Pilot Zones in Southern Lebanon: A Test of the Field and Hezbollah’s Maneuvering Strategy

The pilot zones represent a test of the Lebanese state’s ability to assert its sovereignty, establish a state monopoly on arms, and strengthen the role of the Lebanese Armed Forces in southern Lebanon in return for the Israeli military’s withdrawal. At the same time, they test Hezbollah’s ability to adapt and maneuver within the new security equation. Against this backdrop, the project faces fundamental challenges in developing into sustainable field arrangements and a lasting security reality.
